WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A 22-year-old man was shot and killed near downtown Wichita on Monday, and police say they have two suspects in custody.

Officers responded at around 5:30 p.m. to a shooting at an apartment complex in the 300 block of West 10th Street North and arrived to find Braekwon Bennett with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at a local hospital.

Police spokesperson Trevor Macy said two male suspects, ages 17 and 18, arrived at the apartment and confronted Bennett. An altercation let to shots being fired.

Officer Macy said the 18-year-old was also shot and that both suspects fled the apartment.

"The suspects later arrived at an area hospital, where the 18-year-old was admitted for treatment," Macy said. "The 17-year-old was contacted at the hospital and attempted to run from police but was taken into custody."

The 17-year-old was booked into juvenile detention for first-degree murder. The 18-year-old will be taken to the Sedgwick County Jail when he's released from the hospital.

Macy said it is believed the victim and suspects knew each other.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Bennett was from Warsaw, Oklahoma. Wichita police issued a correction stating Bennett was from Wichita.

Wichita police are investigating another fatal shooting, this time near downtown Wichita, near 10th and Fairview.

“That's crazy. yeah, I didn't I didn't think someone died”

Joel Sebastian has lived at 10th and Fairview for almost his whole life. He was shocked Monday when he came home to find chaos.

"It hasn't happened in a while. Stuff like that used to happen all the time but not anymore"

Police said the shooting happened just before 5:30 pm. They found a 20-year-old man shot in an apartment and he wasn't breathing. He died right after getting to the hospital.

"I can tell you that from witnesses and from video that we have seen from the area, there were multiple shots fired. We're still trying to account for how many," said Capt. Jeff Weible with the Wichita Police Department.

Weible said while working the scene, he got a call that another man who was shot showed up at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in critical condition and the person that was with that victim ran away.

"Somebody fled from the hospital. We were able to find them, get them detained, and we believe they were involved and they're being interviewed by investigators." said Weible.

Investigators were working to figure out what exactly led up to this shooting, but they say it wasn't random.

As for Sebastian, he said he hopes this isn't something he'll have to come home to again.

“I’m glad my kids aren't here. They're with their mom.”
