16-year-old girl killed in northeast Wichita shooting; 3 teens arrested
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Wichita police say a 16-year-old girl has died following a shooting and three teenage suspects are in custody.
Officers responded at around 1:17 p.m. Thursday to multiple reports of shots fired and vehicles chasing each other through the neighborhood around 15th Street North and Belmont, near the Wichita State University campus.
Capt. Jeff Weible said as officers were responding to the area, a vehicle with a group of teens arrived at Wesley Medical Center and that the 16-year-old victim, identified as Azuri Jones, in the car was pronounced dead a short time later.
The suspect vehicle, a red Kia which had been reported stolen, was recovered after the suspects fled the area on foot. Officers located the three suspects, two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old, near 17th and Hillside and took them into custody.
"Preliminary information of the investigation shows that the two vehicles, the groups, know each other. I'm not sure what kind of relationship was there, but they do know each other," Weible said.
The two vehicles met in the 13th and Oliver area before they started chasing each other, Weible said. Shots were fired near 15th and Belmont, and investigators were working to determine if shots were fired in other locations. A firearm was recovered.
