WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Mac Russell spent the first seven weeks and one day of his life at a Wichita hospital, his father by his side as much as possible. His mother died tragically in a car crash moments before his birth.

Mac's dad, Brandon, posted a TikTok video of the infant being loaded in to a car seat at the hospital for his first car ride. The video cuts to a shot of Brandon holding Mac near his crib. Dim light from Wednesday evening's sunset peered through the blinds in Mac's room.

The community has rallied behind Brandon and Mac, raising nearly $120,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help father and son as they begin their lives together.

"Of course nothing will ever be the same but I still have a purpose in life," Brandon said on Facebook last week. "I take solace in the fact that Mac is here with us in this crazy world and I'm grateful for him being healthy. He will know everything there is about his momma."

Samantha Russell was 22 years old, sitting in her car at a stop light at Central and Ridge at around 5 p.m. on July 6 when 37-year-old Javan Ervin allegedly went through the red light, crashing into Samantha's vehicle and two others.

Paramedics told KAKE's Morgan Mobley that Samantha, who was 33 weeks pregnant, died instantly. Emergency medical personnel rushed her to a local emergency room where doctors delivered Mac.

"He's a miracle. I believe there was a plan for him, I absolutely do. I think God had him planned out from the very beginning," paramedic Emma Price said. "He's a special little boy," says Price.

Ervin is charged first-degree murder, aggravated battery, two counts felony flee and elude, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, failure to stop at an accident resulting in death, and driving while suspended.

After seven weeks, news about Mac's birth and his mother's tragic death is still one of the most viewed stories at kake.com.
