GARDEN CITY, Mo. (KAKE) -- A fifth person has died following a crash on a highway southeast of Kansas City, Missouri. 

The crash happened at around noon Monday on 7 Highway in Garden City. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a tractor-trailer went down an embankment and into northbound traffic where it struck a Nissan SUV head-on.

The highway patrol said the driver of the tractor-trailer and two passengers in Nissan died at the scene. The driver of the Nissan died a short time later at a hospital. A 29-year-old passenger in the Nissan was taken to a hospital where he died Tuesday. 

The driver of tractor-trailer was identified as 59-year-old Everett Ashley, of Lowry City, Missouri.

The four people in the Nissan were from Kansas. The driver, 61-year-old Stephen Bennett was from Junction City. The passengers in his vehicle were identified as Jean M. Pariseau, 71, of Herington, Gerald Dittman, 68, of Hope, and Dakota Engel, 29, of Junction City. 

The investigation is ongoing.
