2 arrested for attempted carjacking of retired Wichita officer's mother, police say
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Police have arrested two people accused of trying to carjack a retired Wichita officer's mother last month.
Jail records show 21-year-old Isabel Martin was booked Wednesday for attempted aggravated robbery, and 18-year-old Hunter Foster was jailed last Thursday for attempted aggravated robbery and discharge a firearm. Police confirmed the arrests Thursday.
The incident happened the night of Wednesday, June 30 in the 1900 block of North St. Paul Street. Police said the victim, who is in her 70s, put her car in her garage and when she got out, three young people pointed a high-powered rifle at her and demanded her car keys.
A shot was fired from the rifle. The bullet missed the woman but went through a window and walls in her home.
Following the crime, the woman's son, retired Wichita police officer James Espinoza, said the call he got was one he hoped he would never get.
"A lot of tears, and she was scared, I could hear it in her voice. Having heard too many times, and could relate and so I would probably be the officer here," Espinoza said.
Martin was arrested in March on suspicion of first-degree murder and recruiting gang membership in connection to the death of 22-year-old Gabriel Campos-Torres on January 1, the city's first homicide of 2021. She was later charged with recruiting criminal street gang membership, the Sedgwick County DA's office said, and was released on bond.

Martin's brother, 19-year-old Noah Martin, was charged in April, with second-degree murder in that case, as well as recruiting gang membership.
It was initially reported that Campos-Torres died of a gunshot wound, but an autopsy later determined he was not shot and had suffered blunt force trauma.
Hunter Foster also face several counts of recruiting gang membership in connection to a previous case. Martin's bond amounts total $525,000, while Foster's bond was set at $175,000.
