WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A 2-year-old girl who was shot at Cheney Lake was out of surgery and is recovering Monday evening, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said.

The Reno County Sheriff's Office says the incident started after a man, later identified as Kamden Campos, kidnapped a mother and her two young children in Wichita. According to information from Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter and the Wichita Police Department, the suspect took the mother and children from a home in the 2400 block of North Jeanette and drove out to Cheney Lake in Reno County.

Reno County Sheriff Darrian Campbell said there was an altercation at the lake and the mother attempted to flee with her children.

"While they were fleeing, he (the suspect) shot at the vehicle. He hit one of them, which was the child," Sheriff Campbell said.

The woman drove back into Sedgwick County and noticed the child moving around in the car seat and pulled over and discovered the child had been shot in the back. She called 911 and first responders were able to find her location. The child was rushed to a hospital in Wichita.

Sheriff Campbell said a perimeter was set up and Kansas Highway Patrol aircraft, Sedgwick County drone, Reno County drone and many deputies and officers were searching for Campos. An aircraft identified someone who matched Campos description and guided officers to him. Just before 2 p.m., Campos was taken into custody.

The Reno County Sheriff's Office said Campos was booked into jail on four counts of attempted-first degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and possession of stolen property. His bond is set at $2,101,500, and his arraignment was scheduled for July 27.

Several law enforcement agencies, including K-9 units, remained on the scene searching for the gun used to shoot the toddler.
