Two vehicles belonging to the Wichita Police Department were hit while crews were investigating a deadly crash that stemmed from a race in East Wichita.

It all started around 11:00 Saturday night at Central and Greenwich.

Police say 18-year-old Brennan Peshek was racing on Greenwich in a 2005 yellow Ford Mustang against a 2007 silver Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a 19-year-old male. Investigators say Peshek's lane ended slamming him into the curb, a tree, and a pole.

Peshek was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died.

While investigating the fatal crash, investigators say two WPD vehicles were hit by a driver in a truck who was speeding. It happened at a road block on Greenwich while the critical accident team was processing the first crash scene.

Police say a 28-year-old male was speeding in a 2000 blue Ford F-250 when he side-swiped an occupied WPD F-350 truck and an unoccupied WPD Ford Explorer patrol vehicle, causing the F-250 to overturn. The 28-year-old driver and his 35-year-old female passenger sustained only minor injuries. No officers were injured.

Before the second crash, an Eastborough officer assisting in blocking traffic flashed her flashlight to get the driver’s attention, but was unsuccessful.

The investigation is ongoing, and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the second crash.
