Sedgwick man accused of killing wife is charged with rape, murder
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A 42-year-old man who is accused of killing his wife late last month has been charged in her death.
Craig Johnston was charged Monday with first-degree murder, rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated sexual battery. Sedgwick County jail records show his bonds total $450,000.
Officers responded Friday night to the report of an injured woman at a home in the 7900 block of West 109th in Sedgwick. The sheriff's office said 40-year-old Amber Dawn Slankard had suffered severe injuries and died at a Wichita hospital.
Johnston was taken into custody at the scene.
According to the Kansas offender registry, Johnston was convicted in Illinois of sexually abusing a child between the ages of 13 and 16 in November of 1996.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office confirmed late Friday night that a 40-year-old woman died from her injuries in a reported aggravated battery.
Colonel Brian White with the sheriff's office said officers received a 911 call after 9 p.m. that a woman was injured. EMS arrived to find a 40-year-old woman with severe injuries. She was transported to a local hospital in serious condition where she later died.
During the investigation, officials learned the woman received her injuries from a 42-year-old man, who was determined to be her domestic partner.
Col. White said they are working on booking the 42-year-old male into the Sedgwick County Jail for second-degree murder.
Officials are still investigating the incident.
