WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - It was an emotional day at the Sedgwick County Courthouse Tuesday. Family members of Micki Davis had to face their mother’s killer yet again for sentencing. They said they are just glad it’s finally over.

"Mom taught us one of the worst 4 letter words you can say is hate. And I'm not gonna lie, I hate this monster and I think my mom would be okay with that,” said Jeremy Rush, Micki Davis’s son.

Jeremy rush, the son of Micki Davis who was brutally murdered in 2017, told the court he would never forgive the woman who took his mom away.

"I will never get over this anger, I will never not be angry,” said Rush.

In February, a jury convicted Rachael Hilyard of decapitating Davis, who was her ex-boyfriend’s mom. It happened when the two argued at Davis' home in southwest Wichita.

"The monster, she was a mother. She has scared her son, not just him I'm sure the whole family. Her actions were selfish and wrong in every way,” said Jacona Gillespie, Davis’s daughter.

Hilyard apologized to the Davis family and said she should have found help for her mental health problems.

"I apologized to the many people that knew and loved Micki Davis, I apologized to her whole family, to her grandson, to all of her friends, to my neighbors, I apologized for who I became,” said Rachael Hilyard.

"Mental health issues do not equate to crime. Having a head injury does not equal crime,” said Judge Bruce Brown.

The judge sentenced Hilyard to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 50 years.

"Your life isn't over and my charge to you at this point would be that you turn your life to a life of good,” said Judge Brown.

Davis's family members say they won't forgive Hilyard for what she did, but they are slowly moving on.

“We knew we couldn't change that she had passed away. We had to move forward from that,” said Gillespie.

"We knew that's what it should be. But I don't know, just this case is so horrific that there shouldn't be any other verdict anyway, so that's how it was. Yeah, just glad, glad it's over with,” said Rush.

A 38-year-old Wichita woman who admitted to decapitating her ex-boyfriend's mother more than three years ago has been sentenced to at least 50 years in prison.

A judge on Tuesday sentenced Rachael Hilyard to life with no chance of parole for 50 years. Earlier this year, a jury convicted Hilyard of first-degree premeditated murder in the death of 63-year-old Micki Davis.

Hilyard admitted to killing Davis in April of 2017, but the jury had to decide whether Hilyard planned the crime or if it was an act committed by someone who was out of her mind.

Davis was attacked after she went with her 9-year-old grandson to Hilyard's home in the 1400 block of West Rita to get property that belonged to the victim's son. During the assault, the boy was able to grab his grandmother's phone and run away.

An officer testified that upon entry into the home, he saw a human head in the kitchen and followed Hilyard's dog to where Davis' body was lying on the floor, covered in blood. Hilyard was found hiding in the home.

Hilyard's trial was delayed several times as she underwent multiple mental evaluations.
