West High School basketball player killed in south Wichita shooting
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Wichita police are investigating after a West High School basketball player was killed and a woman suffered critical injuries in a shooting on the city's south side.
Officers responded at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday to a shooting in the 1600 block of South Water, near Harry and Broadway. Capt. Wendell Nicholson said a 17-year-old boy and 41-year-old woman had been shot.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital where the teen, identified as Valincio Hill, died. West High School boys basketball coach Tommy Brumbelow said in a tweet that Hill was a member of the program.
"I really can't find the words right now to express the pain that our program is feeling," Brumbelow wrote. "Valincio was a phenomenal young man that would light the entire room with his smile."
The woman underwent surgery and was in stable condition Monday morning.
Officer Charley Davidson said several people were at the home when unknown suspects approached on foot and fired multiple shots from the street, striking the victims and surrounding property.
No arrests have been made. Davidson said the shooting was not random and a lack of cooperation has prevented investigators from learning all the details of this case.
