WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - An area community will soon see major changes with the revitalization of a historic landmark. For decades the Dunbar Theater served as the only theater where African Americans could go.

Wednesday, WalMart presented a $50,000 check to the Power Community Development Corporation, the group behind restoration of the theater.

“When we heard about this project and the anchor in this community, we knew that we had to be a part of it,” commented Ryan Irsik, Public Affairs for WalMart.

The new Dunbar Theater will serve as a community hub, hosting youth activities, events, and the performing arts.

“This theater was the only theater that Black people could go to at one time,” said Kansas State Senator Oletha Faust Goudeau. “It’s going to keep children out of trouble, they’ll be able to come in and do something fantastic,” she added.
