Kansas WWII veteran beats COVID-19, earns new medals
A veteran from Kansas who survived World War II and earned two purple hearts has beaten COVID-19.
KMBC reports Max Deweese, a 99-year-old Marine from Overland Park, marched out of a rehabilitation facility on Thursday and was met with a deserving patriotic salute.
"I've gone through hell more than once and this came almost as close," he said.
Deweese received a pair of new medals to add to the two purple hearts earned in service to our country.
"I went through the worst of it before I realized I had it," Deweese said.
While he was in the hospital, Max felt awful but he said he would win the battle against the virus. He was treated at Saint Luke's South Hospital and spent three weeks in rehab.
"I realize that, especially at my age. I don't know, 99 years old and didn't succumb to the virus," he said.
