Car crashes into gas meter, causes leak in Hutchinson
Hutchinson police are searching for the driver of a car that crashed into a light pole and gas meter Tuesday morning.
Emergency crews were called around 10:45 a.m. to a vehicle accident at 23rd and Brentwood, near the Diversicare facility. Battalion Chief Rex Albright said the red car was found abandoned. It appeared that the driver lost control while heading south on Brentwood and struck the pole and gas meter, causing a leak.
No evacuations took place, Albright said, but a fire unit assisted in moving elderly residents at a nearby care facility to another part of the building.
"The gas company had to dig west of the property to locate and secure the gas line prior to the meter repair," Albright said.
It took about three hours to get gas service restored.
Again, police are still searching for the driver. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
