NEAR BERRYTON, Kan. (WIBW) - Investigators say drapes too close to a wood burning stove sparked a fire that destroyed an Osage County building and sent a man to the hospital Monday night.

The fire broke out around 8:30 pm in a building at 3675 SE 109th St, between Berryton and Overbrook.

The State Fire Marshal's Office says the structure housed a workshop and living area. It was fully engulfed when crews arrived.

Fire officials say the property owner, Jerry Uhl, who lived in a nearby home on the same property, was hauling buckets of water, trying to put it out when he collapsed. Uhl was listed in serious condition at St. Francis Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was ruled accidental.

The Shawnee Heights Fire Department assisted the Osage County - Overbrook firefighters at the scene.
