TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An errant basketball is to blame for a water-logged mess in Washburn University's Whiting Fieldhouse.

Sports Information Director Gene Cassell says a basketball hit a sprinkler head in Whiting during practice Monday afternoon. That set off the system, soaking part of the court. Water also leaked into the weight room below.

Tuesday, crews were tearing up sections of the Whiting court to see the extent of water underneath and determine what repairs might be needed. Nelda Gaigo of facilities services said the priority was to dry everything out, but some repairs were inevitable. An estimate on what they might cost is not yet known.

The damage means some shuffling of athletics practices and classes.

A major renovation of Whiting Fieldhouse was just finished in Fall 2010.
