TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - State Sen. Laura Kelly wants to educate people on concerns she has with overhauling the Kansas Public Employee Retirement System.
The Topeka Democrat joined a conference call Tuesday with the Keeping the Kansas Promise coalition and a member of the KPERS study commission.
Kelly said a proposal to make it a defined contribution system would cost the state more and doesn't address unfunded liabilities. She also says it would put everyone at risk by making the pensions at the whims of the market.
"I think we can do better and we'll keep working on it," Kelly said, adding no one needs to panic about the discussions just yet.
Kelly says a plan to have employers and employees increase their contributions might be a better starting point.
