Topeka (WIBW) - Fire crews were on the scene of a house fire in north Topeka Friday evening.
Crews were called around 5:30 pm to 3009 N. Kansas Ave.
The resident said he was working in an attached garage when sparks got into some hay used for animal bedding. The flames quickly spread through the garage and to the home.
Flames and thick smoke could be seen pouring from both buildings. Shift Commander Tony Garcia says winds fueled the fire's spread, rolling the flames across the roof.
One person was treated at the scene for burns and smoke inhalation.
Law enforcement and fire crews had N. Kansas Ave. blocked from Walnut Grove to Menninger Road while they worked the scene.
The Red Cross was assisting the home's residents, four adults and four children. The fire caused an estimated $70,000 to the home and its contents.
