Topeka (WIBW) - A man is behind bars for an altercation outside a hospital emergency room.

Stormont-Vail HealthCare spokesperson Nancy Burkhardt says, around 11:15 am Tuesday, a person arriving at the hospital alerted a security guard inside the ER that a man and woman were involved in a physical confrontation outside.

The guard broke it up and detained the pair until Topeka Police arrived.

Burkhardt says such incidents happen occasionally and security is trained to intervene. She says people coming to the hospital, especially the ER, are often going through a stressful time, and sometimes things happen. She says that's why security is available inside the ER and further security regularly patrols the property to keep people safe.

TPD booked Corey Johnson on charges of domestic battery, criminal restraint, and criminal damage to property.
