Topeka (WIBW) - Google, Kansas fever is sweeping the Capital City.

The Topeka Golden Giants baseball team announced Wednesday that it will change its name for the month of March to the Google Golden Giants.

The move is a show of solidarity for Mayor Bill Bunten's proclamation that Topeka would change its name to Google, Kansas for the month of March.

The change is part of an effort to persuade the internet giant to choose Topeka as a test site for its new fiber optic network. It would provide internet speeds 100 times faster than those elsewhere, with data transfer rates faster than 1 gigabit per second.

Landing the Google Fiber Project could be a big boost to the local economy and help put Topeka on the map globally.

"The Golden Giants are firmly behind this effort to help bring Google's Fiber Project to Topeka," Golden Giants President Brett Cowdin said. "We are more than happy to change our name to reflect our community - Google, Kansas."

The Golden Giants have also altered the look of their website to reflect the Google theme for March.

The Google Golden Giants are a summer collegiate wood bat baseball team that will open their season on June 4, 2010 at the Lake Shawnee baseball complex.
