Topeka (WIBW) - A life-saving act and a compassionate one earned two Topekans Champion of Character honors.

Safe Streets Coalition and Topeka City of Character presented the awards Wednesday to Paul Guffey and Ron Dismang.

Dismang and his employee, Nish Williams, were recognized for their involvement in finding a missing 77-year old man who suffered from Parkinson's Disease and rode his scotter down a steep creek embankment. Dismang allowed Williams to use a company truck to take the scooter back to the man's home.

Topeka Police Cpl. Frank Padilla nominated the pair, saying the act saved law enforcement a trip to get a pickup truck for the task.

Guffey earned his award for being in the right place at the right time. He pulled two young people from a burning car after a serious accident.

Topeka Police Cpl. Brad McCarter nominated Guffey.

The Champion of Character Awards are given once a month. Nomination forms are available at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library or by calling (785) 273-4330. They also are online at www.topekacityofcharacter.org.
