Topeka (WIBW) - The name change for the Capital City is gaining international attention.

Mayor Bill Bunten issued a proclamation Monday, renaming Topeka "Google - the Capital City of Fiber" for the month of March.

Tuesday, that declaration had his office phone and email buzzing with interview requests from places like New York, Toronto, even London.

Bunten says it's a great chance to spread a positive message about Topeka.

"We all know Topeka is a special place," he said.

Naming Topeka "Google" is part of the city's campaign to have Google make this a test community for its new fiber network.

Bunten says he's especially gratified that the campaign is bringing together the community's young people.

I like it and I almost hope it sticks! I also wish Google would change its name to Topeka for a month then you could go to the internet and Topeka it.

I think it sounds a little ridiculous. Hopefully the name doesn't stick. We should be proud of our capital Topeka.
