Topeka (WIBW) - Signal lights are a step closer to returning to one Topeka intersection.

In a meeting that lasted only about 40 minutes Tuesday night, Topeka City Council members approved a $160,000 budget to install a new traffic signal at SE 4th and Branner.

The intersection saw 21 crashes in the two years since the signal was removed.

Councilwoman Sylvia Ortiz is glad to see the project move forward. She says it's a safety issue for those who live in the area. She says it's needed, not just for traffic, but also for the many children who walk through the intersection.

The project will be paid for with general obligation bonds. They'll be paid back over 20 years at a total cost of $262,247.

Sounds like a lot of money for a traffic light. Maybe the unemployed should start installing traffic lights. How much could a few poles, lights, concrete and a control box cost? Sounds like someone is making some money somewhere!
