Law enforcement and Topeka area neighborhoods are gearing up the the National Night Out Against Crime.

A group of citizens gathered at the Sheriff's office Thursday to announce plans for this year's event.

Around 4000 people in 35 neighborhood groups are expected to participate in the event Saturday night.

The neighborhoods will host ice cream socials, cookouts and carnivals so neighbors can get to know one another better and be more aware of criminal activity in their areas.

Topeka neighborhoods received a national award for their participation in 2007's America's Night Out Against Crime.

The group held a news conference.
