Topeka Police say it looks like a would-be thief is responsible for an early morning fire Thursday.

Police say someone stole a van from the Village Cleaners around 2am, then backed it into a gas meter near 21st and Seabrook.

When fire crews arrived on the scene no one was in the vehicle but the van was already fully engulfed with flames.

A tow truck was able to pull the van off of the meter. The gas company spent the morning across the street from the gas meter digging into the ground trying to reach the gas line to turn it off. Cox Communications is also working to repair a fiber optic line that the fire melted through, disrupting service for several customers.

No injuries were reported. Lanes of traffic were reduced around the area for a while, but were back open by 11 am.

Susan, you called cox and got an answer? I have never got ahold of them in less than two hours. wouldnt it have been great to have their internet phone service to call them with? especially since the cable and internet was down.

are they sure this was an accidental backing into the gas line? a popular method for burgulary is to steal a car or truck and use it to break into a building. a guns shop in wichita was burnt to the grouond a few years ago because the idiots didnt know about a gas line beside the door they drove thru.

Bill is correct. When we got to work this morning our internet service was not working, we called Cox Comm and confirmed with them that there was an area wide outage due to this incident. As of 6 pm, our internet service was not working. We were unable to email, input information, etc since we rely solely on the internet for about 80% of what we do. Sucks!

I really hope they catch this guy. Not only did he cost the cleaning company their van but it damaged utilities causing interruptions of service through out the city. I just heard it melted a fiberoptic line for cable television and it caused their system to go down. Do people not think about the consequenses of such actions?
