Three young people who sparked an air, water and land search along the Kansas River Wednesday evening have been found.

A person called Wamego Police just before 5 pm, concerned that he saw three kids in the river who appeared to be in distress. By the time an officer arrived to check on them, the kids were no where to be found. Not sure if the kids might still be in the water, authorities launched a search that included crews from Topeka, Rossville, Wamego, Mission Township and Pottawatomie County. The Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter also assisted.

Meantime, Wamego Police put out a message over the city's cable system, asking anyone who had been swimming in the river to contact them. Three teenagers came to the police station with their parents to say they had been in the water. Their names and exact ages aren't being released.

Officials called off the search around 7pm.

The search was a reminder of when 9-year-old Michael Zapletal went missing in August 2007. He was never found, and his family held a memorial service for the boy.

Authorities stressed to these three teenagers to avoid swimming in the river -- especially after recent rain had made the water even higher -- and more dangerous.

Click the video for a recap of the event, and hear from Wamego's Police Chief and Fire Chief.

i am a friend of the three "missing" people.. I've swam with them before.. I did infact the day before and the day before that.. no one called it in.. and suddenly they decide to?? What's up with that?? Maybe they just didn't want anyone in there?? Who knows.. But what ever they were thinking they totally made a big ordeal out of nothing.. for all you know the guy could of called 911 and then just went and poured himself a cup of coffee and turned on the t.v. Either way he didn't go back out and be like hey you kids alright?? If he would of done that he would of been able to call the police and been like nvm false alarm.. sorry.. Think about it.. Signed, good friend of the "missing"

To the kids swimming...you should be happy someone cared enough to check on your well being, most would have drove by without a care of what you were doing.. .. To the swimmer who wrote in..how dare you tell this person to "get a life" obviously you have no respect to the person who could have possiably saved your life had you been in distress, you should be thankful and so should your parents..do you realize how much time and money was spent trying to save you?? Learn some respect...you obviously had just as much time as everyone else to respond to this blog so maybe you should evaluate you own life!!!

I am the Aunt of one of the kids in the water. The person who called the police should have stayed with the kids to see if they were ok. They all had lifejackets on and were just having fun. Telling them to stay out of the river.....is like telling them not to ever go swimming since a tragedy can happen anywhere anytime. The teens know not to go in the river after a rain now. They have family that care and police were just being safe. No one should tell anyone to stay out of the Kansas River. Aunt from Wamego.

I dont think anyone is judging the kids! I just dont understand why in the hell you'd swim in a river. This whole situation could have been a disaster!

To R. I never said that they should have been in the river and I agree that it is very dangerous, but the person who called in should have went to them if he thought they were in drowning. he would have seen that they were playing not drowning like reported to police. It is not illegal to swim in the river

This is addressed to ???? Location Wamego. This not a matter of cutting them a break! They shouldn't be swimming in the river under any circumstances. There is just to many hidden dangers for even the best of swimmers. What would you feel like if these kids would've drowned! I don't know the kids and they are probably great, but I don't wish to see any Parents, Family or Friends go through that! So to all that read this, please think of your family before you do something that you think is perfectly harmless, but could end your life or the life of your friends!

if the person saw the kids and thought they were in distress why did he not stop and make sure instead of driving off and just calling the police, this could have all been avoided if he would have made sure the kids were ok in the first place.

playing in the river is dangerous my parents always told me to never play in there because its unsafe and I could possibly drown in there. Wasn't this around the same place that little boy was when that sandbar collapsed?? Parent's should start to talk to their kids about the river its dangerous!!

Please stay out of the river, with all the rains, it is not safe. We don't need another tragedy.

My husband said he saw three kids (maybe tweens or young teenagers) on one of the "islands" on the West side of the bridge when he came into Wamego on Hwy 99 around 5:00 PM. Does anyone know who the kids are?

RESPONSE: No identifications - all believed to be safe, though.
