A Topeka woman accepted an award for her dedication to the Topeka Police Department on Wednesday.

Safe Streets Coalition and Topeka City of Character presented Patty Parr the Champion of Character Award.

Parr is a volunteer field training officer in the department's volunteer patrol unit.

She has been with the program since it started in 2005.

Par was nominated for continuing to volunteer in spite of a family health crisis. Patty's son is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

In addition to Parr's award, State Farm presented the Safe Streets Coalition with a $2000 check for the Record It, Report It, Recover It initiative to reduce property theft in Topeka.
