Ashley Schirmer excitedly talked about the Special Olympics events she'd be competing in - from the softball throw to the 100-meter dash.

"I'm gonna win!" she proclaimed.

Fellow Holton High School senior Jed Lux would be there, too. The 50-meter dash was his big event.

It's easy to see how these two students with Down Syndrome have won over their classmates. Senior Cory Wilson says anytime you're having a bad day, you walk into the hall and see them smiling and you smile. Breanna Eck agreed - their smiles make you happy.

Ashley and Jed have been part of the class since first grade. Their classmates never excluded them. So when it came time for senior prom, Ashley and Jed joined in. Ashley donned a pink gown, and Jed put on a tux - with Ashley as his date.

But just having them at the dance wasn't enough. Their classmates wanted something more.

"We've always been in the spotlight and they never really have," Cory said. "We felt they needed time in the spotlight."

The seniors at Holton elected Ashley and Jed their prom king and queen. Ashley remembers having a crown put on her head, and she and Jed danced.

"We circled around them while they danced," senior Alicia Coverdale described the scene. "There were so many cameras going off it was like light. It was amazing. They're the sweethearts of our school."

It was a moment the students say they'll always remember for all Ashley and Jed have taught them over the years.

For Cory, it's that there's never a bad day and there's always something to smile about. For Breanna, it's that life's too short to care about the drama and to always live life to the fullest. And for Alicia, Ashley and Jed represent the best of their class.

"They represent how we want to be and how we wish to be in the future," she says.

Thank you so much for the wonderful piece that you put together on Jed, Ashley, and the Holton High School senior class that chose to honor them at their prom. So much news that we hear involves negativity towards our young adults trying to find their way in the world, and it is so refreshing to see and hear a heartwarming story that involves our young adults. Even though Holton is a small rural community in Kansas, I think this story is worthy of national attention. I know that it doesn't involve the presidential elections, the price of gas, the war in Iraq, or the fact that many people are losing their houses through rising interest rates, but it is a "feel good" story about young adults who chose to do the right thing! Thanks again for your attention to this story, and the wonderful piece that you put together honoring Jed and Ashley!

We should all take a page from Holton Highs book. What a wonderful way to honor two inspiring students! I only hope that the students in the surrounding area schools learn by example. I have never known happier and lovelier people than those who have Down's Syndrome. What an inspiration!

Ashley and Jed, it was GREAT to see you again. I’m glad those BIG SMILES have not left your faces. I remember you as seventh graders and the support your classmates gave you. Best of luck to each of you – A former HMS teacher.

I agree there are good kids everywhere and all we hear about are the bad things but it seems, here in the Holton area, we are lucky enough to have an abundance of "Good Kids"!! I just love how these 3 Sr's and this entire Sr class have always provided a great example for all the younger kids!! Good job Cory, Breanna, Alicia and the entire Class of 09!! Congrats to Ashely and Jed!!

What a wonderful, uplifting story. There are so many good kids in this world, but it seems like we always hear more about the bad ones on the news. The seniors in Holton High School are shining stars. Congratulations to Jed and Ashley and all their Senior classmates. You make us proud. Thank you to WIBW for bringing us this wonderful story, and all the good kid stories you highlight.

Way to go Jed. Jed was the ring bearer in my wedding in June of 1997. I was his babysitter for over 3 summers and I learned a lot of Jed, and one of the most memorable was his overabundance of Love for all. I loved his hugs and looked forward to them everyday. Congrats Jed and say hi to your parents.

This was the most amazing story. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Jed and Ashley are wonderful kids and it is great to see their classmates recognized that too. I think Holton High School has a bunch of good kids.
