The City of Colby and other areas in Thomas County were ravaged by strong winds Saturday night.

Director of Thomas County Emergency Management Susan McMahan says Colby Municipal Airport reported 82 mile-per-hour winds overnight, which caused damage to or destroyed many structures in and around Colby and caused damage to several vehicles on I-70 and Highway 24.

In Colby, an apartment complex lost its roof, and one home’s roof caved in. On the west side of town, a large silo at County Road 15 and Oscar had collapsed. There were several areas with power lines down.

Around Thomas County, McMahan reports one barn and 2 outhouses were destroyed. Many power lines were also down in a widespread area, sparking numerous fires.

On I-70, around mile marker 47, a semi overturned, which caused damage to another vehicle. Two miles north of there, on Highway 24, vehicles were damaged either by being blown off the road or by being blown into each other, McMahan says.

There have not been any injury reports.

Emergency Management is still out surveying damage. We will have updates as they become available.
