A large cottonwood tree believed to be one of the tallest in Kansas literally fell victim to last night's storms.

The tree, located on the Dennis farm about four miles east of Mount Hope, crashed down Wednesday Night.

Fortunately, the massive tree missed a fence and a nearby shed by inches.

"We were lucky because this big limb over here," Pam Dennis said. "There was some twist in the wind and it moved it off of our actual fence and then our shed over here, so we were very lucky."

Dennis said when she moved onto the property 20 years ago, she was told the tree was the second-tallest cottonwood in Kansas.
