One person was killed Thursday when a tornado touched down in Kemper County, the National Weather Service said.

Based on the extent of the damage and pictures, the tornado appeared to be at least an EF3, with winds between 136 mph and 165 mph, WAPT reports.

The fatality was reported at about 11:40 a.m. near Highway 493, west-northwest of DeKalb, said Greg Flynn, a spokesman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Tabatha Lott, a dispatcher in Noxubee County, said there were "numerous reports of injuries" in the town of Shuqualak and ambulances were responding.

Flynn said the tornado hit Kemper and Noxubee counties before pushing into Alabama.

Video of the tornado was posted to Facebook by 4-County Electric Power Association. Tony Sudduth, the son of 4-County employee Tammy Sudduth, shot the video in Noxubee County.

Flynn said there are reports of damaged buildings and many power outages in the area. He also said he doesn't know the exact number of people who were hurt or the extent of their injuries.
