The City of Halstead is closing one of their three flood gates as water continues to rise and more rain is expected.
The Harvey County town is planning to close the flood gate on County Road 801, as the level of the Little Arkansas River climbed to 19 feet. That gate will close once workers and volunteers finish filling 500 sandbags. They expect to close it sometime this afternoon.
Volunteers are being sought to help fill a total 1,500 sand bags. Anyone who can help is asked to report to the City Shop at 1st and Logan.
Highway K-89 is shut down, from US-50 to Halstead. Hertzler Road is also closed going into town.
Additional rainfall is expected in the area beginning Wednesday evening.
