The National Weather Service office in Wichita will be the among the first in the nation to receive a new radar upgrade that will watch the weather better.
Federal officials announced at a recent meeting that a dual polarization upgrade developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Norman, Okla., will be installed next summer or fall in Wichita.
The new radar data will flow into the KAKEland WeatherPlex as soon as the retrofit is complete.
The announcement was made last week at the quarterly meeting of the American Meteorological Society chapter in Wichita.
Dick Elder, meteorologist-in-charge with the Wichita office, says the new radar will give meteorologists more confidence in analyzing storms.
The radar upgrades will be installed at the rest of the weather service sites over a two-year period ending in 2012.
