A heavy sandstorm choked Baghdad for at least two consecutive days over the weekend, closing the Iraqi capital's airport and sending dozens of people to area hospitals with various medical problems.

The blanket of sand was stirred up by strong winds over the large desert region of the middle east of which Iraq resides, so sandstorms are common in the oil-rich country.

Visibility in some cases was down to only a few yards, forcing most residents off the streets and closing businesses. American and Iraqi military personnel were forced to wear surgical masks to shield their lungs from the dangerous sand.
