Fire crews battle flames at scene after scene. As thunderstorms moved across West Wichita cloud to ground lightning turned out to be a real big danger. Lightning strikes sparked six house fires in just five minutes.

"It got pretty busy when the thunderstorms came through town. It's been very active with the lightning just through the whole west side," said Battalion Chief Rob Hughes.

Lightning struck the top front peak of a house on the 800 block of South Sedgwick just after 6 p.m. No one one was home at the time. Crews put the flames out fast but the fire caused $10,000 in damage.

Luckily the fires didn't cause any injuries but commanders were worried about their crew's safety. As they worked lightning kept striking across the area.

And the biggest problem was making sure there were enough crews out on the streets.

"Just the biggest problem we have is when you have a thunderstorm come through and you have multiple alarms in a very short period of time then it kind of stretches our coverage just a little bit so that's why we try to regroup as fast as we can and get these guys back in service as soon as possible," said Hughes.
