More than 500 flights have been canceled at New York City-area airports as a winter snowstorm bears down on the Northeast.

An airport authority spokesman says most of the cancellations are at Newark Liberty International Airport. About 140 flights have been canceled at LaGuardia, and about a dozen at Kennedy.

Air travel delays are also expected in Massachusetts, where many schools are closed or planning for early dismissals. Gov. Deval Patrick is asking non-emergency executive branch employees to stay home today. He's also encouraging private companies to keep workers home.

The storm bearing down on the Northeast comes as parts of New England continue to recover from last week's ice storm.

About 10,000 customers are still without power in Massachusetts. In New Hampshire, forecasters are calling for heavy snow in the southern part of the state, right where utility crews have been trying to restore power to most of the 33,000 customers still in the dark.

The National Weather Service has posted a winter storm warning and predicts that snow could fall at about one to inches an hour in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and elsewhere Friday afternoon.
