A stronger Hurricane Paloma is lashing the Cayman Islands.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami say the storm has grown into a Category 2 hurricane with top sustained winds at 105 mph.

The center of the storm is expected to pass near the Cayman Islands Friday night or early Saturday, then move onto the central coast of Cuba. At 4 p.m. EST, the center of Paloma was about 40 miles south of Grand Cayman.

The Cayman Islands government urged residents to stay off the streets and began preparing for evacuations in low-lying southern coastal regions, and a hurricane warning is in effect. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch are in effect for the Cuban province of Granma.
