The first big snowstorm of the season in the Northeast has shut down part of a major highway and closed some schools in New York state.

New York's Thruway Authority said sections of Interstate 84 were closed Tuesday morning at the New York-Pennsylvania state line. Officials say numerous accidents were reported on I-84 in the region near Port Jervis, N.Y.

Several schools have closed or delayed their opening in parts of upstate New York, where as much as a foot of snow is forecast.

The National Weather Service says a winter storm warning is in effect for parts of New York state until 8 a.m. Wednesday, and winter storm advisories are posted for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Vermont.

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph are forecast.
