Seatbelt Enforcement Angers Some NW High School Students
- Posted By: : Why do some think that these students are above the law? Good life lesson...Obey the law or pay.
- Posted By: Buck: You over estimate the uneducated, uninformed and unaccountable to actually think? Buddy, you need to clean the cob webs out, why do you think you have a job? It's certaintly not because of all the rocket scientists on this blog.
- Posted By: Fred: Bingo!
- Posted By: Fred: I wonder how many cars the cops searched.
- Posted By: Another NW Parent: Agreed, it is parents AND kids. Anyone who drops off or picks up their kids at NW knows the entrance and parking lot are one big cluster, an accident just waiting to happen. The WPD & USD 259 blew a big chance to build relations with parents and kids by doing this seatbelt/traffic sting. I get it, they were trying to prove a point. But really, this is such a dangerous intersection and instead of having people help direct traffic and lessen the congestion, they decided to add to it by pulling people over and giving them tickets. Really??? Why have we put up with it for so long? Yes, drivers need to wear seat belts and obey traffic laws. But maybe we should start with using our tax dollars to install a traffic light at this intersection instead of setting up a traffic sting. Was WPD within their rights to do this? Absolutely. And hopefully more people will remember their seat belts. But this did nothing to help make a dangerous intersection any safer, and also did nothing to build positive community relations.
- Posted By: DM: Seat belt violations are the gateway crime to hard-core crimes like right-of-way yield crimes, and dancing. You should be glad the government intervened, you were failing as a parent.
- Posted By: Not Kelsey: Wow, you must know a lot of people that do dumb stuff. You should find new friends.
- Posted By: falcon95: Yeah my daughter was one the two cited for the "right of way yield" violations. What a crock this charge is. She was waiting to turn left into Northwest and a classmate was turning right into the school and paused to motion my daughter to turn ahead of her. My daughter was pulled over and cited for this. Apparently it is a violation to turn ahead of someone even if the person is simply being nice motioning you to turn. I've seen this 5 to 10 times every morning when the kids are entering school. They're simply being courteous to one another. The officer could have simply gave her a lecture that this is not legal, but instead he writes her up and now she has a moving violation on her record. And she was wearing her seatbelt. So it was more than just a seatbelt check.
- Posted By: Reality check!: Thankyou for you comment i was a victim in a accident which i did not cause, and the firefighters that extracted me from my car, said i would have been dead, if i was wearing my seat belt, cause the door off my car flew into passenger seat where i was sitting! Anyways i am an engineer and car accidents is my job and the statistic is 50%! i have also seen decapitation from seat belts and crushed trakes! When you get into an accident with forces like that, does not matter if you are wearing your seat belt! Most teenagers that are writing on here are on meth! just sayin!
- Posted By: Reality check!: your wrong especially if they are dead, if they have insurance they have to pay! Get an education everyone! All teenagers should be in jail!
- Posted By: DM: Obviously farther.... much farther... than you.... moron. Get back to your low class, minimum wage worthless job...
- Posted By: DM: Glad to see his attitude is wearing off on you.
- Posted By: DM: Dang... you're all still whining about this? it's old news... find something else better to do.
- Posted By: Dan: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AWESOME
- Posted By: Wtf: You are a liar
- Posted By: BD: IDIOT!!!
- Posted By: : very true
- Posted By: Druid: Oh, cry me a river! Get over it, princesses! The seatbelt law has been around forever! If the rest of KS has to click it or ticket, so do you.
- Posted By: Kelsey: Wow some of these comments. I personally knew 3 people who died caused by wearing a seat belt, 2 people whom the seat belt saved their lives, and 1 person who died and the seat belt could have saved her life but guess what ... I still wear my seat belt because there's still that 50% chance that I was lucky enough the seat belt saved my life. Uncontrollable events happen every day people can't control it! Now no, I don't agree with the seat belt law but I still wear it because its the law and if your getting into my vehicle you better believe you'll be putting yours on too or you can get out. And as for arguing about it on here you can't change the minds of those who aren't willing to change. If you don't like the seat belt law then ok go protest or get a petition signed but see how far that honestly gets you and if you'd like don't where your seat belt but then suffer the consequences of getting a ticket because that's just how it goes! And I am a supporter that you must be required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcyle because I know more people that lives were saved due to helmet then people who's lives were saved by not wearing a helmet. I've also heard a lot of stories about people who could have lived if they would have worn a helmet so I definitely agree that should be a law! But let's face today its not but wearing your seat belt is so make your choice you can either obey the law or not obey it and suffer the consequences! Because whether you think it is or it isn't ... IT IS YOUR CHOICE, but like ANYTHING else your choices will have consequences!
- Posted By: : its the law because a dead person cant pay the thieves tax money. dead=no tax $ for thieves
- Posted By: Michelle: For all of you who think it's all about the money, I'm sure that it could be arranged that you spend time in jail in lue of the $25 fine.
- Posted By: Michelle: It's not like the law is new. If they have a driver's licence, it is their responsibility to know the law. The fines are there to get people to obey the laws. When the fine was only $10, people wrote it off as "It's only $10." It's not about money, it's about doing what's right. If there were not consequences for breaking the law, laws wouldn't be obeyed. I'm sure if you would rather serve jail time in lue of the $25, that could be arranged.
- Posted By: Educated: It's 14 weeks long genius and then 6 months of training after that. Get a life.
- Posted By: Jennifer: You need to understand a few things. Police don't mess with their computers at high rates of speed. And if they do you should say something. And most of the time they do wear the seat belts and if they get caught they get their fair share of repercussions. So get over it. seriously
- Posted By: Jennifer: I love the fact that the WPD did this. It shows the reality of how the law works. It's a law to wear the seat belt and in that spot where students and parents come in to NW high I have seen at least 3 accidents. It's a crazy entrance to the high school and students should understand that adults have to wear the seat belt as well. If you think you're old enough to drive, then you're old enough to obey the rules of the road. Get over it if it upsets you.
- Posted By: stop whining: Just fasten your seat belt and you won't have to worry about getting a ticket and it will probably save your life some day, so maybe you can be a useful addition to the world.

- Posted By: : The only thing you'll be meeting head on is your windshield if you're not wearing your seatbelt.
- Posted By: What a waste of time: Students, you were told about the law for days in advanced.
Police, find a better way to acquire money for the city.
People, if you don't sign your donar card where your seatbelt .
- Posted By: : You should crawl back into yours.
- Posted By: Wtf: You are truly a fool. NASCAR drivers are highly trained defensive and offensive drivers, and they still crash! Put your seatbelt on or off!! Should be drivers choice. Oh, isn't that police driving school a couple of days long? Yep, your trained...
- Posted By: Student: Please run for president! Best comment yet
- Posted By: American: Police don't where seatbelts, why do I have too? Go catch a meth dealer and leave me alone. I also text, smoke, change radio stations, and drive at the same time. Never had a wreck.. Police also type on computers while they are driving (@ high rates of speed) they don't crash, usually!! Personal responsibility is the answer, you can walk or crawl. How did we get out of the CAVE???????
- Posted By: Me so stupid: Enough.. The law is the law. Was it a waste of tax dollars? 5$ dollar fine x 26 tickets = 130$ dollars.. So they weren't out to make money! How much did it cost the tax payers to put the WPD out there??? With that being said, go shut down the drug houses the sheriffs and police sit on for a year. There's the money!!
- Posted By: silly squares: So you can legally kill an unborn baby
Ride a motorcycle without a helmet
Ride a bicycle in the middle of the road
and you are worried about my seatbelt the first car i bought did not even have seatbelts. Everyone wants to live forever well guess what it aint happening. And dont tell me it taught these kids a lesson 3/4 of there parents is the ones that got punished because they have to pay the ticket. If you want to wear a seatbelt wear it if you dont then dont. Im just glad the wichita pd didnt shoot anybody.
- Posted By: cliff: its not about whether obeying the law is optional, its about having to obey laws that were passed without consulting the people of the state. I guess what the people want is optional here.
- Posted By: Charles: So what laws should be enforced? The announcements were made they were warned and choose to ignore the warnings and the law. So they either grow up and obey the law or suffer the consequences of their actions.
- Posted By: Eric: The question is, how many laws do we need to be following? How many laws do you want? Is the seat belt law really in your best interest? What if you get hit hard enough to pin you in the car when it catches on fire, when you could have possibly gotten out but the seat belt jammed? What if your in a convertible and being thrown free of the wreckage saved your life? Do you really want to be strapped to a 3500lb bomb waiting to explode? Seat belts jam, most especially in an accident. Fact. The point is what it was that made this country great...limited government following the WISHES of the people. It was not my wish to have seat belt laws, was it yours? I did not wish to be persecuted for being a smoker, but I was and am. Its my business as long as my NOT wearing a seat belt doesn't kill anyone-how could it? Does it affect you if you are in your car next to me if I am not wearing a seat belt? Should the old man I just saw today driving his '70 Chevy pickup truck have to post a sign in the back window that says "lap belt only" so he is not hassled? Where does it end? WAKE UP TO WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING!!! OR ARE YOU TOO TIMID TO MEET IT HEAD ON?!?!?!?
- Posted By: : No the problem is now people think that obeying the law is optional. If they get a ticket for violating it they try to rationalize it by calling it Gestapo tactics, over policing, greed and so on. Instead of just admitting that yeah I messed up I'll whine about it.
- Posted By: Kansas Officer: I've got a question for all those opposing this or saying it's not about saving a life. How many of you have stood on someone's front door step hesitant to knock, because you don't want to tell someone that their loved one is dead, because they were ejected from a car? Believe me when I tell you that it isn't fun. Just something for you to think about.
- Posted By: Eric: Trouble is they are usually never close when you need them, and unless every item you own has a recorded serial number they can't do squat to help you in the event of a theft-I know from first hand experience. Lets face it, when was the last time you ever heard of the police stopping a murder aside maybe from hostage situation? Pretty much never. Most murders are committed by people close the victim and its over before the police have time to blink-a fact. Our freedoms are taken away every day a little at a time. This kind of thing never happened when I was in high school. If there was a serious problem, then the police showed up. Seat belts are as far from serious as we can get friend. Open your eyes and see whats really going on. The city needs money-more tickets, higher fines, more court costs-that's their fix-big government infringing on us around every corner. You probably believe it needs to be bigger to do more for you because you can't do it yourself-your wrong. Where does it end? Should we send them randomly to peoples homes to see if our smoke alarms have batteries and maybe give fines if they don't?-its about that stupid. Maybe I don't want to wear my seat belt so I can be thrown free of the wreckage-just what I want to do-get pinned into a 3500lb car with 10-15 gallons of highly flammable gasoline strapped to my back!!
- Posted By: Eric: The problem is unnecessary OVER policing and a real shift in the the attitudes of the police and those in the justice system in general over the last 30 years-I've watched it first hand and you are probably not old enough to even remember 30 years ago-that's probably part of the problem. More people-percentage wise-are incarcerated now than ever before-its a fact! Fines for routine traffic violations are 100-200% higher than just a few years ago. Wake up and see whats actually going on friend because you are blind to the greed running the whole system and you are a part of the problem because of your apathy toward it. And I've got your "cage" right here swinging baby!!!!
- Posted By: guest: You must still be asleep. I don't think we have nearly enough. You could keep your hard earned money if you follow the laws.
- Posted By: Mouse Piece: I do see what the problem is.Some people will complain about the stupidest things. The law is to protect passengers within a car. If you don't want to wear seat-belts, then walk your happy hiney everywhere.
- Posted By: Anynymous: Teenagers think they are invincible. If the seatbelt enforcement project saves even one life it is well worth the traffic jams and the fines. You can't be with your kids 24/7. I'd much rather my kid get a ticket for not wearing his seatbelt than to be called to the hospital to identify his body because he was killed in an accident from not wearing a seatbelt.
- Posted By: zebra: Ca-ching!
- Posted By: LEO Sergeant: Well, I'm sure that if the number of officers on the streets would be reduced you would be among the first to complain. If you have a better plan please submit it so you can educate the rest of us on what it's like to be awesome.
- Posted By: Reality check!: your right enough force, your dead anyway, exactly my point, there isn't a chance with a seatbelt when dealing with those forces therefore, seatbelt don't always save lives first hand and victim! Oh yeah i have more science than anybody that has posted on kake, therefore your little liberals, need to follow all the laws! ha ha
- Posted By: : what rights. u do not have the right to drive a car, and there is the law about wearing your seat belt. I see no infingement in that, saying that is like blaming a cop for getting a speeding ticket
- Posted By: Buck: Should have married a banker....they rob the minions with the stroke of a pen and it's legal.
- Posted By: Baffled by Eric: Please don't call the police next time you need help. Cops are at every corner to respond to the numerous amounts of calls that come in. Gangs are at an all time high. I would be willing to bet you have some type of criminal record my friend. IF you're willing to trash talk law enforcement so openly, please handle your own business if you home gets burglarized, a family member murdered or some other heinous crime. Apparently Eric, you don't need the police.
- Posted By: Bizzaro: Can you be a little more clear on your problem? I'd guess mommy and daddy didn't give you enough attention in your cage.
- Posted By: : LIKE!
- Posted By: Justin: While I agree that seatbelts save lives, why is it the role of the government to require us to wear them? Being in health care I'm sure you know that lung cancer and heart attacks far surpass MVAs in causes of death in the US. So wouldn't it be more beneficial for the government to make it illegal to smoke and eat at McDonalds?? If they are truly trying to protect our health they should be concerned with other things, but they are simply trying to make money.
Traffic tickets are a joke. Maybe the police should spend more time in the dangerous parts of Wichita being seen rather than giving out seatbelt tickets...this might help curb gang violence. I live in the hood and have never seen a cop drive by my house...oh and somebody shattered my sliding door trying to break in six months ago. I don't get how giving out tickets is fulfilling "protect and serve".
- Posted By: Barrack: Really? And where did you find this urban ledgend? Or did these statistics appear in a dream after you fell asleep smoking your crack pipe?
- Posted By: Cranky: Should have gotten a ticket for no air in the spare........make excuses for your kids, they will grow up walking South Broadway and you'll still be coddling them.

- Posted By: Buck: "Occupy the morgue" protest ....LOL, getting your moneys worth in the public school system
- Posted By: Buck: Should have pinched their heads off instead.....
- Posted By: D: Brad. You are safer in a car than a motercycle.and the state of kansas if your 16 or under helmets are the law, I don't agree with that I belive helmets should be the law for any age. but helmets are not mandatory and seat belts are, thats the realiety, thats why you can be ticketed. If you ever see personaly someone die from not wearing there seat belt or helmet it will change you forever.
- Posted By: : Give it up and get back to Kindergarten so you can learn this all over again.
- Posted By: : How much does it cost them to scrape you off the pavement when you get thrown from your vehicle.
- Posted By: : You might want to join them on the bus and give up the car.
- Posted By: : Those little things could lead up to finding drugs in the vehicle too.
- Posted By: : Don't flatter yourself you're not that special.
- Posted By: So what: So his parents gave him a car. Do I sense a little jealousy? At least he's accepting responsibility for his life and that of his passengers.
- Posted By: : They should be ticketed if they don't wear their seatbelts. They need to learn how to follow rules and abide by them. How many of their posts were sent from school computers when they should have been doing classwork?
- Posted By: Sunflower811: What makes this a story? Why try to create controversy where any reasonable person would see none? The police probably should spend more time at schools than they do. It looks like the Indianapolis 500 when the parking lot empties after school..........
- Posted By: Other stupid laws in Wichita.: One can be sent to jail for up to a year for making lewd comments over the telephone. / Before proceeding through the interesection of Douglas and Broadway, a motorist is required to get out of their vehice and fire three shot gun rounds into the air.
- Posted By: ANONYMOUS: Make no mistake folks, safety has nothing to do with it, its all about the money-Wichita's finest are nothing more than revenue producers for the city. If you think I am wrong, just look around...how many police do we really need in a town this size? We have waaaaay more than enough, and enough ways of milking us of our hard earned money. Your safety does not enter into it at all...
- Posted By: Zack: God bless you your family & especially your husband!
- Posted By: ERIC: MORE WICHITA NAZI GESTAPO TACTICS JUST LIKE THE DUI CHECKPOINTS. ITS ALL ABOUT THE REVENUE FOLKS, MAKE NO MISTAKE! WHAT OTHER REASON IS THERE FOR THIS TYPE OF INFRINGEMENT OF OUR RIGHTS? DID WE REALLY NEED 200 MORE POLICE OFFICERS IN THIS SIZE CITY A FEW YEARS BACK, OR WAS IT JUST BECAUSE SOME BEAN COUNTER TOLD THEM IF THEY HIRED THESE GUYS AT X AMOUNT PER YEAR, THEY WOULD PRODUCE AN AMOUNT IN EXCESS OF X IN FINES AND OTHER B.S.? REALLY? DO WE NEED A COP AROUND EVERY CORNER JUST WAITING TO MAKE SURE YOU AND I CONTRIBUTE OUR FAIR SHARE OF FINES? THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED ON LIMITED GOVERNMENT AND FREEDOMS WE NO LONGER HAVE! HOW MUCH FURTHER WILL WE LET THIS GO? DOWNTOWN ARENA-SAME THING-DID ANYONE REALLY VOTE FOR THAT? NO ONE I TALK TO ADMITS IT. SEEMS LIKE THE BIG CONTRACTORS WHO NEEDED A BIG REVENUE JOB GREASED THE CITY AND GOT WHAT THEY WANTED REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU AND I THINK. SMOKEY BACK ROOM DEALINGS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT HERE IN GOOD 'OL DOO DAH! MY GRANDFATHER ALWAYS SAID IF GOD WERE GOING TO GIVE THE WORLD AN ENEMA, HE WOULD PUT IT IN WICHITA KANSAS! I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHAT HE MEANT UNTIL NOW!!!
- Posted By: Jason: If there is enough of an impact for you to break your neck due to a seat belt you have enough momentum to go out the windshield of your vehicle which the impact of that will smash every bone in your neck and or face so loose loose situation. At least with the seat belt you have a chance.
- Posted By: Jason: That is what you think, if you were to die in a car accident due to not wearing your seat belt not only are you hurting yourself but all your friends and family. They all have to suffer and watch you be placed 6 feet under because you choose to be ignorant and not wear a seat belt and passed years before your should have. Stop thinking of yourself and think of others.
- Posted By: NW Parent: FYI the Toyota 4 runner that was pulled over was a parent with their child in the passenger seat.
- Posted By: Jason: If you covered yourself instead of hanging out of your clothes then they wouldnt have anything to look at now would they? Some peoples children smh!!!!!
- Posted By: NW Parent: Dropped my son off this morning at NW, and most of the cars that were pulled over were parents not the kids. As I was leaving, every kid that drove by me had their seatbelt on. Some kids were even getting out of their parents car that was pulled over by the police and walking up to the school. So don't put it all on the kids.
- Posted By: : suck it up kiddos! click it or ticket!
- Posted By: jr: seatbelts save lives. and if nothing else it saves you from paying a ticket. trust me i learned the hard way after my two friends was ejected and passed away. i was going less than 10mph. you just never know what the other guy is doing..
- Posted By: : I don't see where the story is. Apparently nothing significant happened a bunch of kids are upset about it.
- Posted By: Cop's Wife: I'm sorry, I have to say something. To all of you idiots complaining about police doing their JOB, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves. My husband risks his life every day getting thugs off the streets, parenting YOUR children (this includes requiring them to wear their seat belt even if you don't see the importance) and even taking a bullet if duty calls. As a trauma nurse I have seen children die on my table because they didn't buckle up and I have seen police officers bleed out and die from taking a bullet from some punk kid who learned to hate cops from their no-good parents. If you dislike cops so much and what they do (this includes traffic stops and ticketing for no-seat belts as well as more "dramatic" duties such as stopping rapes and attempted murders), then why don't you go ahead and handle your own issues instead of dialing 911 the next time you find yourself in an emergent situation.
- Posted By: Not wrong: I'm a cop's wife and know what I'm talking about. Trust me, it sickens me that my husband risks his life every day to protect the kids you all can't raise, keep thugs off the streets and take bullets just to receive hatefulness and condemnation from the people of this community. I've actually watched a police officer bleed out on my Trauma table as a trauma nurse after taking a bullet from some punk kid. Police officers are heroes and you all should be ashamed of yourselves.
- Posted By: : If you want to act like and adult and have the priveledge to drive...then obey the law like other drivers on the road or suffer the consequences like other drivers on the road. Just because kids are old enough to have a license to drive, does not necessarily mean they possess the maturity to handle the responsibility that comes with it. Kids are in such a hurry to grow up and parents allow them to experience 'rights of passage'...however...know your kid...As a mom, I would take the keys to the car if my girls got a ticket for not obeying the law. Seatbelts save lives, might not 'look cool' but without one, you look like a 'fool'. BUCKLE UP and be safe...or ride the bus!
- Posted By: : You were given a car. Ahh the silver spoon.
- Posted By: : I wonder how many of these were the same one complaining about the no texting while driving laws too.
- Posted By: : Long Live the Nanny State!
You know where the safest place on earth is? Prison. Why do you think they call it Maximum Security.
- Posted By: Brian: The kids were advised in the days leading up that they should be wearing their seatbelts. They chose to ignore the advice and continue driving without wearing a seatbelt. I have no sympathy for them. This whole thing is coming off as kids with entitlement issues getting upset that they can't do what they want without repercussions. You're in high school. Grow up and take responsibility for your actions instead of acting like a child.
- Posted By: UM OKAY: I am sure that is EXACTLY what it was... a harassment project for that particular girl! Really??
- Posted By: Michelle: I was in an accident a year ago Sunday. My car was totaled. I was T-Boned. Accidents can happen no matter how careful of a driver YOU are. Other people can cause accidents. I walked away with a tiny piece of glass in my neck. (Easily removed) The best part is I WALKED AWAY! Had I not been wearing my seatbelt, I would have been seriously injured if not dead. If you want to gamble I guess it's up to you, but don't complain if you get caught breaking the law and get a ticket. If you are old enough to drive, you are old enough to take responsibility for your own choices and actions. There are consequences for choices. Don't wear a seat belt, and you could be injured or killed. That $25 ticket is probably going to be the least of your worries. Just do yourself a favor, save yourself $25 and your life and put your darn seatbelt on!
- Posted By: DM: Ok... Brat... Snot.... Heathen..... Better?
- Posted By: uh-huh: if i was wpd and a person i pulled over jumped out with a gun. i would take my 4000lb, 50 fps projectile (car), hit him or her and make them a hood ornament.
- Posted By: DM: Someone needs to write you a ticket for grammar and spelling....
- Posted By: Anonymous: Plus, the seatbelt law has been in effect for an entire year.
- Posted By: Anonymous: The officers' salaries are the same no matter what they are doing. Learn how taxes are spent before complaining. Also, making sure that people are wearing their seatbelts IS an example of the police trying to keep us safe.
- Posted By: DM: Uh huh.... Bet you've been to Mickey D's way too many times and are jealous.
- Posted By: Janice: Isn't wearing your seatbelt a law in Kansas? Sounds fair to me.
- Posted By: DM: Toyota 4 runner..... given to you.... must be nice... I had a 64 Pontiac Catalina, very used... and I had to buy it.... youth today have is so insanely easy.
- Posted By: DM: Ahhh.. poor little babies got their feelers hurt... If you were not a bunch of spoiled little brats and followed the law you would not have a ticket..... ah.... young morons.... glad to see they are starting them out young.
- Posted By: Marty: Oh, you poor little children!
- Posted By: KS: If that is going to be your defense, you will go nowhere real quick in life. Grow up and accept the ticket as BIG GIRL!
- Posted By: KS: Regardless of if the driver turning right gave her the OK to turn before them, she was still in the wrong. If the other driver had decided they didn't want to wait and they ran into each other....guess who would be at fault? YOUR DAUGHTER!! I understand that kids are foolish at times but I hope there was a lesson learned today. Oh...and you saying it was harrassment by the WPD will NOT help your child learn her lesson. Stop defending her and let her know she was wrong in hopes that she developes safe driving habits. Kudos for the seatbelt BTW!
- Posted By: ha: What a bunch of babies! Grow up, follow the laws, and no tickets. Pretty simple.
- Posted By: Antwun: Tina, your're just upset you kept shoving it out there hoping it would get it out of a ticket. He said nice try, thanks for the show, here's your ticket!
- Posted By: buck: too bad, so sad. Go hold your breath child.
- Posted By: Thanks: The students were told about the seat belt enforcement, and they still got tickets?
Lol. Private school is the only way to go!
- Posted By: : i agree
- Posted By: J: Note to students pulled over, the 'law' states that while operating a motor vehicle that you must wear your seat belt. If you were my kid you'd be loosing your driving privileges for quite awhile. Observe the law, you might live longer.
- Posted By: Dirty Harry: Tina, if you deploy your air bags I will look too and I dont even have a badge.
- Posted By: retired trooper: Welcome to accountability and driver resposibilitiy. Don't get behind the steering wheel if you can't obey very simplistic safety laws. Really, you could train a monkey to put a seat belt on, but public school student.....I don't know.
- Posted By: Eric: Anonynous @ 1:25-
It's actually a $50 ticket if you're under 18. But still, I'm glad they all got tickets. That girl won't be complaining of the seatbelt ends up saving her life someday.
- Posted By: e-activist: protest! protest! protest!
- Posted By: JERRY: THE POLICE ARE TRYING TO TEACH YOU TO WEAR YOU SEATBELT. SOME PEOPLE DON'T LEARN. TALK TO ANYONE WHO WORKS IN THE ER AT A HOSP.,SEE WHAT THEY THINK.
- Posted By: Paul: Then the law should be changed for motorcycles. That doesn't excuse dumb people from not wearing seatbelts. The "But other people ____" arguement is always one of the dumbest...
- Posted By: SPELL CHECKER ON DUTY: Maybe Jared should go back to school & learn how to spell.TOW OTHERS WERE TICKETED. He needs to learn the difference between TWO & TOW.
- Posted By: pathetic: It's next to impossible to get through to NW students. Their parents pretty much let them do what they want, and then pick the pieces up when they fail! Of course we would have a mother of a NW student complaining on here! Now you can see why they think the pd are the ones in the wrong. Pathetic! Wear your seat belt, follow the laws, and there would be no problem... Hmmm? Have a great day!
- Posted By: Post DUI lanes 2 days before: Sounds like the kids should have listened at school, they told the students a few days before they came!!
- Posted By: : Now you leave poor lil' precious alone before you hurt her feelings,,,
- Posted By: : A seat belt fine is $10. Seriously?
- Posted By: D: You need to go back to sicence class.
- Posted By: EMS: Seatbelts make my job easier in finding your body when your texting and driving and run off the road. Atleast with your seatbelt on I know your in or near the car. Without it I have to attempt to find your body parts after you were ejected, dismembered, and killed. Now I think I have the unfair side of you not wearing your seatbelt.
- Posted By: Torin: I am a senior at Northwest High, and I think this is really silly. I do not understand the juvenile reaction from fellow classmates. When my parents gave me my car, a toyota 4runner, they told me that if I didn't wear my seatbelt they would take my car away. Since then I always put it on and anyone that gets in my car must follow the same rule. It's really simple.
- Posted By: janice: It my niece had been wearing a seat belt, I wouldn't of had to attend her funeral when she was 15 yrs. old. Maybe this reminder (ticket) will save your life someday.
- Posted By: Zack: She broke the laws.
- Posted By: Defensive driving instructor: God I'd really like to meet you to set you straight for spreading such harmful lies.
- Posted By: Chris P. Bacon: I want to play the fun name game too.
- Posted By: What: Who tickets the police when they break traffic laws!?
- Posted By: Zack: You dolt.
- Posted By: Anon,: Shure he did.
- Posted By: ??: How come the police never get tickets for not wearing a seatbelt? Are they really above the law?
- Posted By: Old School Scofflaw: Everyone is angry at the police.
- Posted By: Ben Dover: Sorry honey.
- Posted By: : It shouldn't be a law.
- Posted By: sandy: BUCKLE UP!!! IT'S THE LAW!!! I have never in my life seen so many people drive without a seatbelt here in Wichita. It only takes a second to do. Stop complaining about it!! It just may save your life one day and save your loved ones a lot of heart ache. I'm sure the WPD found a number of the students texting/talking while driving. What more has to happen for young and old to understand the importance of safety while driving.
- Posted By: : Today I learned kids that who don't buckle their seatbelts become thugs.
- Posted By: anom: I bet half of the people that have posted a comment on here don't even wear their seat belts.
- Posted By: Brad: D, I think you missed my point. As foolish as it is, I am safer in my car, even without the seat belt, than the guy on the crotch rocket with no helmet. Yet I am the one who can be ticketed.
- Posted By: anom: It's lose not loose
- Posted By: yeah right: okay barney one bullet. spare us the professional driving ability of the force description.
- Posted By: Dang: Wasnt it a few months ago a sheriff officer hit some guy in a motorcycle?? Real tactical. Did the sheriff receive a ticket??
- Posted By: jackie sanders: to anoneymous"
you hurt those left behind. I have lost 2 sixteen year old cousins. They may of survived with a seat belt on.
- Posted By: Jackie: How many fellow classmates funerals will it take?
- Posted By: parent: Yeap
- Posted By: parent: I AGREE
- Posted By: parent: Yeap, if adults can get them so can the kids. If it was my kid, ticket them, they'll keep paying or learn to click it
- Posted By: Brandon: Ignorance of the law excuses no one from practicing it. -A. Mizner.
- Posted By: NV: Just wear you stupid seat belts! you never know when someone might slam into you vehicle.... AND STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR BODY IT WITHERS IN TIME AND THE NEXT YOUNG KIDS WILL TAKE OVER.
- Posted By: parent: And they don't grasp how things are changing daily. All they want to do is look cool driving and talking on their phone.
- Posted By: parent: Oh give me a break. How stupid of a thing to say.
- Posted By: parent: Yeap, I agree 100% with you.
- Posted By: parent: I agree. They think driving is all fun and games. It's because of their stupid actions driving that they raised the age limits. I say keep raising it.
- Posted By: Ben Dover: Adults generally say please, but OK darlin.
- Posted By: Antwun Parker's Ghost: If you kids think that law stinks, wait until you get out of college and have to give so much of your money to the high school dropouts that THEY are making more than YOU.
- Posted By: your wrong: have you seen the wpd and sheriffs parking lot there is atleast 5 to 10 crashed cop cars a week you call that professional and defensive drivers ha
- Posted By: Tina: I got a ticket and the cop kept looking at my chest like some kind of creep!!!!!! He just kept staring down there when he was talking to me.
- Posted By: : So as a society we can choose rather are not to kill our unborn child. But cannot choose rather or not to wear a seatbelt and by choosing not to wear my seatbelt i only hurt myself not anyone else.
- Posted By: nw mom: it's one thing if it's literally a "seat-belt" project. but one of my girls got pulled over~ she was turning 'east' (left) off tyler, being given the go ahead by the driver waiting to turn in (turning right) & SHE was given a ticket for an 'illegal' turn & also for not having a SPARE TIRE underneath her little suv. WHAT?? since when is searching for a spare tire part of a seat belt project? she HAD her belt on, sounds more like a harrassment project for this particular girl. 2 tickets for things that have nothing to do with a seatbelt...???????
- Posted By: : You break the law you become the thug, the criminal and you must pay. Buckle up.
- Posted By: Reality check!: I know wearing seatbelt is a law, but that law is totally political, reason i know, is statistically speaking, there is more people that die with wearing a seat belt than not, its been that way for many years! Yet now cops can pull you over without any probable cause, other than oh i thought you didn't have a seat belt! Even if you where wearing your seat belt, in an accident the force of the impact would go through the seat belt, either crushing your trake or snapping your neck, it happens all the time but they dont report it! Then if your still in acar the airbags could crush every bone in your face! just saying! Don't alway believe what you regurgitate from statistics, that no one knows where they came from!
- Posted By: D: Brad. an air bag won't work very well without a seat belt. thats why there called a supplemental restraint sys, beliving that an air bag is a save all device is just plain foolish, and not yoused properly can be worse than no air bag system at all. ask an automotive engeneer, even with the latest veichels some car wrecks are not survivalble. read your cars owner hand book. the life you save may be your own.
- Posted By: john: somewhere along the line the students forgot all about safety not just for them but everybody.they need a refresher course in save driving,i think the school should of done this before they were ticketed.
- Posted By: Anon: Don't mouth off kids! You know the rules.
- Posted By: CJ: Couldn't agree more!
- Posted By: : Sounds like the kids aren't responsible enough to have a license yet. Maybe the laws need to change. Like raise the age to 18.
- Posted By: Owen Cash: Don't call me sweetie
- Posted By: : The government is just getting us used to tyranny. The police should be out catching the thugs with guns and attempting to keep us safe. Why do they need to harass students. I agree kids should be buckled up, but this is a waste of our tax money.
- Posted By: k: Hilarious!
- Posted By: Tommy: If u don't want the fine PUT YOUR SEATBELT ON. It's called a law for a reason.
- Posted By: : She probably posted in on twitter while she was driving home.
- Posted By: Dear Mature "WTF" post: Police dont wear their seatbelts because they are trained not to. They are professional tactical and defensive drivers first of all and secondly what if they were pulling over someone and that person got out with a gun? They have to be able to get out quickly. Before you whine about not wearing YOUR life saving device maybe you should get some education first.
- Posted By: Tubby: Better than having an accident and going thru the windshield !! Learn a lesson !!
- Posted By: Eric: 21 years old and still a student???? I don't know if you're smart enough to be giving advice....
- Posted By: Balliver: Simple - It's the law...grow up and abide by it! Oh wait I forgot..you're in high school...you know it all already...good luck to you with that...
- Posted By: Dan: Laws are strange. Kansas allows you not to wear a helment when riding a motorcycle, that's fine. But Kansas law enforcers will ticket me for not wearing a seat belt in my car.
- Posted By: Bryan: What about all the kids that were riding a school-bus today, Wichita Police Department? Aren't you going to issue them seatbelt tickets too?
- Posted By: Brad: The ticket for seat belt = $5. How much does it cost for the city to pay an officer to look for drivers not wearing their belts, pull them over, then have the court house process the ticket. I don't think we're coming out ahead on the deal. This is not a money making deal. It's supposed to be for our own good.
Why is it ok for someone to ride around on a crotch rocket without a helmet, but if I ride in a crash-tested vehicle with air bags, forget to put on seat belt, I get a ticket?
Whats next? Tickets for not brushing your teeth? I put the two about on the same level.
- Posted By: Buck: Stupid Kids, follow the laws, it is for your own safety too. Tired of the me me society and the kids these days. They have no clue what it was like back in the day.
- Posted By: D.R.: Shout out to the mouthy kid... It's the law, it's your fault you weren't abiding by it, get over it and grow up!!!
- Posted By: Dan: Go figure, kids get caught doing something wrong and instantly blame cops for "ruining" their day. Its hilarious that the kids were informed days prior and still neglected to buckle up. Touche WPD
- Posted By: MeMa: As a parent of two, I applaud the Wichita Police for this!!!!!! Parents can't always be there "to buckle up their kids since they won't do it themselves" so ticket away!!!!!!!!!
- Posted By: D: The law is the law, giting cought braking the law will git you a ticket or worse. so many out there belive the law dose not apply to them, poor little babies.
- Posted By: guest: Hey! Dont want to get stopped by police?? Don't break the law!! Stop whining
- Posted By: rick: WOW maybe these cry baby kids should shut up and wear a seat belt. not like they didnt have a heads up this was going to happen. If they want to be treated as adults then they can be issued tickets like adults.
- Posted By: Wtf: Shouldn't the WPD be more worried about the gangs in school! If seat belts are so important, how come they don't put them on the school bus? Look at the police, they hardly ever wear seat belts!!!'
- Posted By: Campus High Student: They should not be angry about this. I'm only 21 years old and I already know too many people that could still be alive if they were wearing their seat belt. Teenagers, don't take your life for granted. It can be taken away from you at any moment. Wear your seat belt so you will hopefully live to see graduation.
- Posted By: : Law is the law, if you're not obeying the seat belt one then how many others are you not obeying..gripe all you want..if you were my child you would not be driving the car, on another point it still frustrates me that we have a seat belt law but no helmet law we in cars are safer without seat belts than motorcycle riders are without helmets, if we have seat belt law then there needs to be a required helmet law, hypocrites Wichita is.
- Posted By: anonymous: This is news? Am I supposed to feel for these kids because they got caught breaking a traffic law that has been on the books since 1986 or 1987 (they could ticket you for not wearing if you were stopped for other violations)? The law was revised a few years back (before the no linger in the left hand lane was enacted) where they could stop and ticket you for solely not wearing your seatbelt. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT (IT'S A LAW) IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO GROW UP AND QUIT CRYING ABOUT THE TICKET!
- Posted By: lmao: That's so funny maybe they should've buckled up....let's hope this is a learning experience.....Ty wpd
- Posted By: Brats: Sorry the police caught you breaking the law in an effort to one day potentially save your life. Brats.
- Posted By: Ben Dover: You learned an adult lession today sweetie.
- Posted By: Cami: It's not surprising that teens would respond this way. It's too difficult for them to comprehend that it costs more money to clean up a fatality accident than it does to let someone know he/she should wear a seatbelt.
- Posted By: Holly: Honestly I commend the Wichita Police. Unfortunately they have to do their job because these kids' parents never did. Kids nowadays dont understand the consequences of not wearing their belts. My own kids loose their car keys if I EVER catch them without one on. Good job Police and Administrators.
- Posted By: Concerned Parent: I don't care if ANYONE is angry about this. Last time I checked the KS Driver's Handbook, wearing a seatbelt WAS REQUIRED!! These kids are young enough that the information on the KS Driver's Exam should be fresh in their minds. Wear your seatbelt and comply with laws and a police officer won't have a reason to pull you over.
- Posted By: : of course they need the money! plus they need to fill their ticket quota for the month so none of them will look bad in their supervisor's eyes when they check their activity logs. its not about safety as they claim it is. that's simply a p.r. statement to cover up what is actually the intention.
- Posted By: Listen: Next time maybe you will listen! It sucks but it's the law maybe it will save your life someday
- Posted By: Donna: Way to go Wichita PD. Nobody is above the law with seatbelts. It is the law, no matter what age you are.
- Posted By: Pam: My 18 year old son died in a car crash. He was normally a seat-belt wearer, but was not wearing one at the time of the crash. He is dead and our world is upside down. I hope the police CONTINUE to pound the importance of a seat belt to every teenager out there. You want your "day ruined"? Try having the police show up at your door to tell you that your son has been in a fatal accident and then have people "comment" under the story that he could have lived if he was wearing a seat belt. GET OVER YOURSELVES teenagers.
