A man is dead and a woman has sustained critical injuries after an accident in Sumner County.

The Sumner County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to an injury accident in the 900 block of East 100th Avenue North in Belle Plaine just before 12 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, deputies were told the driver was pinned inside the vehicle and the passenger was unresponsive.

Investigators determined that a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am was traveling westbound on 100th Avenue when the driver lost control, crossing over into the south ditch and striking a large tree on the passenger side. The impact caused the vehicle to spin around where it came to a rest facing north.

The driver has been identified as Estella Owens who was transported to Wichita in critical condition but has since been upgraded to fair condition. The passenger has been identified as Raymond Shiner who died from his injuries.
