Man critically hurt in southwest Wichita fire

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A man was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition after a house fire southwest of Pawnee and Meridian.

Firefighters responded to the 3000 block of W 27th St S at around noon Saturday. A home and car were completely engulfed in flames, and crews found a man who had suffered burns.

Firefighters say it took them longer than expected to get the fire under control, but they do not think weather played a part.

"It probably slowed crews down a little bit, but roads were real well on my way down," said Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Jason Jones. "I came from downtown, and the roads were fine."

Investigators are trying to find out what caused the fire, and crews will be out throughout Saturday checking for hot spots.
