Crews battle grass fire near Derby

DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) -

A fire official says a grass fire east of Derby has been contained. 

The fire was reported at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of 55th Street South and Rock Road. Division Chief Carl Cox with the Sedgwick County Fire Department said a exhaust from a pickup truck doing some farming work caught the grass on fire. 

The fire jumped Rock Road and burned about a half-mile to the east before it was contained. Crews from Derby, Mulvane and Wichita assisted Sedgwick County. 

No structures were damaged in the fire. Crews will monitor the area for flareups.

The fire was reported at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of 55th Street South and Rock Road. A Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said one home was threatened by the fire, but no injuries were reported. 

Northbound Rock Road was closed at 55th Street.
