One person died and another was seriously injured in a crash just west of Topeka in Shawnee County, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday on eastbound Interstate 70, the Capital-Journal reported. Investigators said the crash occurred when the vehicle drove into the median, went airborne over a creek, and then hit the creek embankment and a bridge pillar.

Carlos Colon-Medina, 29, of Topeka, was a passenger in the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver, Michael McElheny, 23, of Perry, was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital with serious injuries.
