1 dead, 1 hurt after single-vehicle crash in northeast Kansas

One man is dead and another is seriously hurt after a crash in northeast Kansas.

The accident was reported before 6:30 p.m. Friday on I-70, about 1.6 miles west of SW Auburn Road in Shawnee County.

Michael McElheny was heading east on I-70 when, for an unknown reason, his pickup truck left the road and continue east into the median. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the truck went airborne across a creek and hit the east embankment and bridge pillar.

McElheny, 23, of Perry, was taken to the hospital for a suspected serious injury. His passenger, Carlos Colon-Medina, died. Colon-Medina, 29, was from Topeka. The two were wearing seat belts.
