Runners kick off 2020 with "Hangover Half Series"

If you wanted to sleep in this New Year’s holiday, there was a group of runners that may have made you feel a little… slower.

“I’ve been doing a 5K a month for the past six months and I just decided to push myself and do all three in 24 hours,” said Kirsten Jones. “Just everybody getting out here, having a good time, bringing in the New Year, get to see fireworks going off and it’s my birthday.”

About 650 runners registered for the Hangover Half Series – three 5K races which started New Year’s Eve evening in El Dorado, and finished in Wichita the morning of the first.

“A lot of runners that don’t necessarily do the standard end of year thing and wanted to do something fun with their friends,” said Trevor Darmstetter, one of the owners of Timer Guys, which coordinated the race. “Really you can come out, bring your friends and have fun celebrating the New Year.”

The runners go out regardless of weather, but admitted Wednesday morning’s conditions were much nicer than some year’s past.

The event happens every New Year for the past several years in the area.
