WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A suspect is in custody after a shooting and standoff in south Wichita prompted police to evacuate residents from an apartment complex.

Police were called to a possible shooting around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Pawnee Park Apartments in the 2400 block of west Pawnee.

Officer Charley Davidson, with the Wichita Police Department, said a man came out of the apartment and opened fire on an occupied vehicle. The person was not injured.

Officers evacuated people from apartments in the area. The SWAT team was called to the scene and tried to reach the man in an apartment.

Just before 6:40 a.m. 37-year-old Jose E. Rivera-Avila was taken into custody by members of the SWAT team.

Davidson says investigators believe Rivera may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.
