WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Sedgwick County Zoo leadership was set to demolish the main entrance to the zoo Monday as a part of six million dollars in upgrades the zoo is making.

Zoo officials say due to high winds, they don't want employees working on scaffolds. The demolition portion is canceled, however, they plan to provide a tour of the temporary entrance for the media, and will provide refreshments to celebrate the opening.

The renovation plans include a new entrance, leopard habitat and electric train. The entry way is being designed to help more people get inside, since the zoo has seen a spike in visitors since it opened in 1971. Future renovation plans also include an expansion of the gift shop and a new administrative building.

Numerous long term events are also in the works including a hotel and water park, community events center, aquarium and sky rides.

These upgrades follow the demolition of the Asian barn in early 2019. The Sedgwick County Zoo also posted pictures on their Instagram page, showing people signing the entrance over the weekend before it gets demolished.
