GREAT BEND, Kan. (KAKE) -

Authorities say nearly a dozen pigs were killed when a tractor-trailer overturned in central Kansas.

The accident happened late Wednesday night on U.S. 56 about three miles east of Great Bend. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the tractor and livestock trailer rolled into its side as the driver attempted to make a turn.

The trailer was loaded with about 155 head of swine. Approximately 10 were killed.

Sheriff Bellendir said the semi was heading east when the driver attempted to turn left onto K-156, adding that "the driver may have cut the turn too sharp."

The 26-year-old driver was not injured. Authorities were on scene until about 2 a.m. Thursday offloading the pigs onto another truck.
