Haven High school students buy gifts for less fortunate kids

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Darby Roper is shopping for some items he's never needed before.

"Some pink and purple stuff and some unicorn and mermaid gear of any kind."

It's all for his 6 year old angel. He wants to give this little girl a Christmas shes never had before.

"We're all pretty blessed to have what we have. We always had toys under the tree."

This is the first year haven high school has done anything like this, they adopted 12 angels to buy gifts for, and its all coming from the pockets of these teenagers.

"They started bringing a little bit here and there, couple of dollars, some gave a litle more some gave what they could and all of a sudden we were at 990 dollars," says Tara Cooprider, Haven high school counselor.

The chaos of over 100 high school students taking over a target, all in an effort to take learning outside of a classroom, and farther than a textbook.

"What can we learn outside of the curriculum of the classroom what can we learn about life ab out ourselves about who we are and what can we leave them as they head into the next chapter of their lives, and hopefully that's how to be good humans," says Cooprider.

Counselor Cooprider hopes today's lesson was hidden in their hearts instead of their heads.
