Man killed in officer-involved shooting near Kansas-Missouri border

PITTSBURG, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said a Pittsburg man is dead in an officer-involved shooting.   The incident started early Friday when a Pittsburg police officer tried to stop a car that had tags registered to another vehicle.  The driver failed to stop, driving toward the Kansas-Missouri border.

The KBI said the driver got out of the car carrying a shotgun and ran into a field.  The officer followed the driver into the field where the shooting happened.

Jeremy Pelican, 34, died at a Pittsburg hospital.  No law enforcement officers were hurt.   The Kansas Department of Corrections lists Pelican as an absconder on its website.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will lead the investigation since the shooting took place in Barton County, Missouri.
