Blood shortage: baby boomers age out of blood system

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

The American Red Cross is sounding the alarm about blood donation shortages.  But it's not your typical holiday appeal.

As one generation gets older, the need grows and the supply is shrinking fast.

Several blood donation sites throughout the country are in what they call a blood emergency.

There's a critical shortage right now going into the holiday season.

Baby boomers used to be the backbone of the blood system, but now, it's up to millennials to fill the gap.

"Now that baby boomers are aging out of being able to donate, maybe they're being deferred or maybe they're actually turning into recipients of blood. So as that happens were needing more blood to make up for their aging out," says Norma Mitchel, American Red Cross employee.
